GEORGE AZIZ YACU

George Yacu has extensive experience and demonstrated expertise in all aspects of the oil and gas industry in Iraq, including exploration, appraisal drilling, field development, production, and the management of oil reservoir projects. He was responsible for planning, setting up, and running all types of exploration activities in Iraq, including geophysical, geological, exploration and appraisal wells, and national well logging. He has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the discovery and appraisal of many oil fields (including several super giants) in Iraq, such as: North Rumaila, West Qurna, Majnoon, Nahr Ben Umr, Luhais, Subba, Halfaya, Khabaz, Buzergan, Jebel Fukka, Abu Ghirab, and others. He also participated in the development of many oil fields in north, central, and south Iraq and is well known to the operating organizations at these locations.

Sumer Petroleum Services is a privately owned Iraqi Company dedicated to the provision of petroleum services in Iraq. As managing director, Mr. Yacu directs the overall activities of the company and provides technical and business consultation services to international oil companies and service providers. In the process, he interfaces with the local Iraqi operating and exploration companies during the provision of these services.

Mr. Yacu played an active role in the development of strategic long-range plans for the Ministry of Oil and the National Oil Company of Iraq. He was also involved in the introduction of new technologies and project management organization techniques that became the norms within these entities. At this senior management level, he was also involved in following up and evaluating the progress of construction of selected major upstream and downstream projects.

Mr. Yacu set up and expanded the operation of exploration activities in the National Oil Company of Iraq. Under his direction, fifteen seismic crews were formed over a period of five years - a major accomplishment by any standard. Mr. Yacu, also, played a major leadership role in expanding exploration, appraisal, and development drilling activities and in directing, coordinating, and evaluating these activities and passing on the lessons learned to his colleagues.

Staff Reservoir Engineer and Geophysicist

Because of Mr. Yacu's strong mathematical, geological, geophysical, and field background, he was selected for special intensive training in the United States, England, and the Gulf region and was made a reservoir engineer and later an area reservoir engineer for the IPC Group of Companies. He was involved in reservoir studies, oil availability plans, and management of oil reservoir in the northern and southern producing fields of Rumaila South, Zubair, Nahr Umr, Kirkuk, Jambur, Bai Hassan, and Ain Zala.

Mr. Yacu worked in geophysical surveys, mainly seismic, as party chief, area geophysicist, and regional geophysicist for Basrah Petroleum Company, Iraq Petroleum Company, and Mosul Petroleum Company. He worked in all areas of Iraq and was seconded for six months for work and special velocity interpretation tasks in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Bahrain. He is well known for introducing and pioneering new seismic interpretation techniques in Iraq, and discovering a number of geological subsurface structures.

  • Played a major leadership role in the establishment of the Iraq Oil Exploration Company and the Sumer Petroleum Services Company
  • Published 221 works regarding oil and gas, management, and cultural issues related to Iraq.
